The Health Benefits of Green Tea

Green tea has many wonderful health benefits ranging from fighting cancer to helping dementia prevention. What causes these benefits? How much do you have to drink?

Antioxidant Power
Green tea is filled with catechins, which are powerful antioxidants.  When you drink Green tea these catechins act as free radical scavengers, searching through your entire body so they can eliminate as many of those cancer-causing nasties as they can.

Free radicals are like the pollutants for our bodies; they damage our cells, encourage mutations (like cancer), create bloodclots, age us prematurely, and cause atherosclerosis.

Green tea is less processed than other teas. Due to this, its catechins are unique and more concentrated. One of them in particular, epigallocatechin (EGCG) is found in very high quantities within your average cup of green tea.

Just remember that the bioavailability of EGCG is not very high within the human body. So try and drink at least 3 cups a day to get some of the health benefits of the antioxidants.

Cancer Fighter
Green tea has a great verity of health benefits; the one that people find the most interesting is its cancer fighting properties.

Within laboratory environments EGCG has been shown to inhibit cancer growth and kill the cells that are growing in an irregular pattern. Essentially, showing that green tea very well has the potential to perform in the same manner within people.

There have been a few different studies on human patients, exploring the effect of green tea on cancer growth. One of these medical research papers was conducted on women with Stage 1 and Stage 2 breast cancer. The findings were very positive; showing increased green tea consumption prior to and after surgery was strongly associated with much lower cancer recurrence rates.

Other studies have found a strong correlation between increased green tea consumption and lowered risks of developing a wide array of different cancers. So in effect, the studies to date have shown that green tea is significantly beneficial to reducing cancer risks and inhibiting cancer growth.

There is obviously still a lot of room for further research but I feel the lab studies on EGCG and the patient studies are more than enough to justify drinking three cups of green tea each day. From the research conducted, the positive health benefits of green tea do seem to include wonderful cancer-fighting abilities.

Heart Health
One of green teas health benefits is that it improves the overall health of your heart. As has already been said, green tea is filled with antioxidants. One of the benefits of them is that they act as dilators; improving the flexible nature of blood vessels which helps to lessen the chance of them becoming clogged.

Clogged arteries can cause heart attacks and strokes, so the fact that a normal beverage can help prevent one of the most common deaths is pretty wonderful! Studies have indicated that consuming three to four cups of green tea each day can significantly help reducing the chance of clogged arteries, especially in females.

Weight Loss
Among the many different health benefits of green tea is it’s ability to aid in weight loss and decreasing bad body fat. In scientific studies green tea has been found to lower levels of LDL (bad cholesterol) and help in the battle against obesity.

Research has shown that drinking green increases your metabolism and helps with fat oxidization. Essentially helping you lose weight through two different methods, using more of your energy from food (preventing it from being stored as fat) and burning the extra fat currently stored on your body.
